USC opened the 2026 season with a 42-26 win over San Jose State, and there was a LOT to take away from this game.

The biggest thing that stood out? USC looks committed to running the football. The Trojans consistently leaned on their rushing attack, with King Miller, Riley Wormley and Shahn Alston all finding the end zone. USC finished with 164 rushing yards and controlled the game from the opening drive.

The young talent also showed up immediately. Freshman Trent Mosley had a ridiculous debut with 7 catches, 118 yards and a touchdown, while USC played 16 true freshmen throughout the game. Kayden Dixon-Wyatt also scored in his debut.

But there’s still one major question: the defense.

USC dominated for three quarters and led 35-3, but San Jose State scored 23 fourth-quarter points against the Trojans, making the final score much closer than the game actually was. How much should we worry about that defensive performance?
